Computer Use Self Assessment

Computer Use Self-Assessment

Dr. Inyang A. Ukot, M.B.; B.S., FMCGP, FWACP, DOccMed.(Lond.)

Chief Consultant, Family Medicine

Introduction

  • In today’s world there is hardly any family that does not have one computer;
  • Many homes have at least one laptop with/without desktop computer;
  • There are many homes that each member of the family has one laptop – in others one or two members have a personal laptop and an office laptop.
  • This means that computers are here to stay – with us;
  • The presentation is about the computer workstation;
  • The greater challenge seems to be beyond the office where there is likely to be some form of “order”;
  • To me the greater challenge is with people that use laptops and hand-held devices like phones.
  • Before I proceed, I request the reader to consider what happens to our children in our homes and their schools long before they start paid employment.
  • Bad habits developed much earlier in life may show their effects during years of employment.
  • We should pay attention to the way we and our children use laptops, iPad, phones, etc.
  • This presentation can be adapted to any of the listed devices.

Workstation

  • You do not need to have a computer workstation to assess yourself and your practices and implement the contents of this presentation.
  • Though called a laptop, the best resting surface for it may – like for a desktop computer – be a hard surface (usually a table of standard height) and not your laps.
  • This means that the presentation applies to both your desktop and laptop.
  • A laptop differs from a desktop unit in the sense that it is readily moveable and so you must repeatedly ensure that you meet the distance and other requirements.

Conclusion

If a proper self-assessment showed that you have not been doing the right things, it is time to start effecting corrections and using your computer the right way.

Right use of the computer will not only give you comfort but also make you efficient at your work and ultimately ensure good health.

Guide for assessment: Indicate YES or NO beside the question. Refer to the downloadable result and interpretation after carrying out this assessment on yourself.
